I was born and raised in Duluth, MN, an outdoor paradise where I learned to love canoeing, fishing, trail running, and Mt. biking. I was inspired to get into teaching by my father, a high school shop teacher who really knew how to connect with students, especially those struggling within the “box” that education so often puts kids in.

After obtaining my first degree in Secondary Teaching English, I took off for Japan with the JET program and spent eight years living out in the countryside, immersing myself in that amazing culture, climbing Mt. Fuji, learning a new language, trying raw whale meat (I’m a vegetarian, but had to do it once), and amassing ridiculous amounts of Japanese pottery.
I moved to Portland with my Japanese wife in 2006, subbed for a bit (one of my first sub days was at Trillium), entered the Special Education Masters program at PSU, and soon after landed a job at Madison High School. I also spent one year at MLC downtown, where my seven year old son is a student.
Six years later,  I am excited to help students succeed in a creative, experimental, student-centered environment that can help them learn about themselves and the world in different ways.
I enjoy running, cycling, camping, and listening to jam bands. I’m also just beginning to learn fly fishing.
